Expander-GeneratorExpander-Generators are used to convert the expander power into electric power. These machines come in three configurations. In the first, the high speed expander shaft is coupled to a speed reducing gearbox, which is then coupled to the induction or synchronous generator. In the second, the Expander wheel is directly mounted on the high-speed gearbox pinion, eliminating the high-speed coupling, and the separate expander shaft, bearings, and bearing housing. In the third, the Expander wheel is directly mounted on the shaft of a high-speed generator, eliminating the gearbox entirely. This third configuration is limited to lower power (50-500 kW) applications. |
